Victoria Beckham Interview

What have you been doing apart from promotion?

"Really, really busy. I've been finishing my documentary which is coming out in March. I basically got followed by a film crew for four and five months so that should be very interesting.

"I've just finished working with Robbie Craig - who's worked with Craig David and Artful Dodger - and he's doing a duet with me. I asked him to listen to one of the tracks on my album called 'I Wish', he rang me up and said he really liked it and wanted to work on it so we made it a duet and got it remixed so it's a bit of a dance vibe going on with that one. I'm hoping that's going to be my next single."

You've been doing far more live performances recently - do you still face negative public preconceptions?

"I'm never gonna please everybody so I just have to please myself. I've done Parkinson live and Des O'Connor live, I shouldn't have to feel that I'm constantly having to prove myself. I don't care what people say now, I love doing it.

"This song gives me the opportunity to do it live because it is a ballad and I don't have to worry about tight costumes ripping or wigs falling of like I did with the last single. I did my first show before Christmas for the NSPCC at the NEC in Birmingham and there were about 15,000 people there and I had a 100-piece orchestra plus my band and it was totally live.

"It was amazing and that's what I'm concentrating on more this year live shows, acoustic work on the radio and it's what I love doing. It's a real buzz cos I'm a musician. When I was at the NEC I sang 'I Owe You' and 'A Mind Of It's Own' and to hear songs that I'd written with a 100-piece orchestra - that's what it's all about.

"But I'm also a performer so me doing '...Innocent Girl' and miming it, I can still show my dancing talents. It's very different but I do love doing it live. It's great."

"Not enough people know me and my music yet. Lots of people bought my book. Lots of people know what I wear, what my hair is like, what my weights like and all that kind of thing but not enough people know about my music yet. And I expected that. It might not happened with this single, it might not happen with the next single. It might take another album but I feel whatever happens with this single the perception of me has changed with this. Things are turning around and listenignt o the music rather than concentrating on what I'm wearing."

Do you still enjoy it?

"I'm still loving it. I'm a lot more relaxed with this single. I've had two records out in the last two years and people have said, "is it going to be a No.1?" and it hasn't been No.1 either time so in a ridiculous way that's great for me cos now no-one's expecting me to have a No.1.

"People are listening to the music rather than judging it on me. With '...Innocence Girl' it wasn't about what song you preferred - mine or Kylie's - it was about the race and who the media wanted to win and how they were going to perceive you."

Have you opened up to an older audience?

"I hope so. I think music's for whoever. I don't know what to expect really. I hope my fan base is growing as I hope it'll grow with the next single cos that's why you release them from an album."

Who's going to win Pop Idol?

"I think Will's going to win. He's very talented and he looks great. He looks like he could be your mate and I think that's important for a pop idol. It'll be interesting to see what happens."

Do you sympathise with the pressure they're under having gone through the audition process?

"Obviously we went through the audition process but it wasn't so public. Everything they do and all their teething problems will be very public and that's very nerve wracking. Only now do I feel ready for a solo career and I've been in the industry for six or seven years so it must be very tough to win a competition and instantly be a solo artist and not have time to make your mistakes privately. It's going to be very hard."

Is it any wonder why Hear'Say have imploded?

"I don't know what's happened to them. I've never really followed them or been into that type of music necessarily. I just hope whoever wins doesn't take the instant success too personally. After that there's probably going to be a dip there is with everyone's career. As long as that person is strong minded and realises it's the situation rather than the success of the individual at the start then I think they'll be fine."

Have you watched Footballers Wives?

"Yes. Everyone always asks me about this. I don't think it's particularly real to my life or footballers that I know. It's entertaining and great to watch but not particularly real."

What have you got planned for the rest of the year?

"Obviously the world cup will be very exciting. I've got lots of great things happening this year so watch this space."
