Born in Saginaw, Michigan on the 26th of September 1981, Serena Williams - younger sister of Venus - has already made a huge impact in the game.
In 1999 she claimed five titles including the US Open (where she managed to overcome the experienced trio of Hingis, Davenport and Seles on her way to the crown). Good performances the following season were somewhat overshadowed by the success of her older sister, but her temperament, athleticism and talent make her a dangerous opponent on any surface. Serena missed out on the singles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but still achieved a gold medal with her sister in the doubles. Already in 2002, Serena has picked up the French Open and Wimbledon titles. While competition is always fierce in the women's game, Serena looks set to continue her success for many years, and will be looking to add to her collection of major titles during 2002. |
