Kristy Swanson Interview

I suppose the whole female half of the planet is dying to know whether Luke Perry's sideburns are genuine.

- What, like they're Velcro or something? Those sideburns are for real.

Please continue.

- The word "simple" kind of fell into our vocabulary, 'cause he'd say, " I'm just a simple guy." So I'd call him Mr. Simple. "Come here, Mr. Simple."

You're, like, Buffy the all-American, all-girl killing machine. Does this mean you're going to cut a rap record now?

- I wouldn't dare. Yes, Buffy is a girl, and Buffy kicks some hard ass, but it goes a little deeper than that. It's not about "I'm a woman and I can kick anyone's ass." It's about change and challenging yourself, getting over your fears and taking one step further.

Did you have to kick a lot of Buffy hopefuls in the teeth to get this part?

- In the fangs, you mean? It's a matter of making the moves big and dirty. They never asked me if I was a fighter. I did have a dance background. I did flying kicks. I had a lot of bruises and sore bones.

Did working with a woman director make it easier or harder to play this role?

- Huh. When I was sick, Fran brought in a pillow and a comforter. You know, "Can I get you some chicken soup?" There's no obvious difference between a man or woman director.

So she wore a skirt while she yelled, "Hit him hard! Harder!"

- Actually, she didn't really wear a skirt. She did wear earrings.

And where are your parents during this whole vampire-killing episode, young lady?

- Off to Palm Springs, to get a tan.

Are men going to be afraid of you?

- The guys are gonna go, "Damn!" They're gonna think it's cool. I think the girls are gonna think it's really cool. I can kill vampires and get the guy in the end.

Mr. Perry's character more or less ends up a certified vampire slayer.

- It's about equality. He wasn't given the strength, but she showed him he could be just as equal as her.

I think I read somewhere that the screenwriter had seen so may films where the pretty blond girl walks into the dark room and gets it that he wanted to see the pretty blond girl walk into the dark room and kick some butt.

- She may walk into the dark room, but she's still afraid. Her biggest fear is, What are her friends going to think? Because in the beginning Buffy knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. She's so shallow.

You, in fact, missed the battering and banality of high school.

- Because I was working. I was taught at home from grades eight to twelve by my parents.

And you don't regret it?

- I enjoy characters. I learned to study people, family, friends, everybody. That was more important than going to the prom. My sister-in-law, Jyl, was the model for Buffy. I observed her for weeks before shooting because had that attitude. No professor can teach you that.

What are you going to be typecast as now?

- Let's see . . . Buffy at thirty, Buffy at forty. I've played the cheerleader, the girl you bring home to Mom, the victim, the alcoholic, the drug user. I've never been typecast. Everything I' m looking at now is different.

Donald Sutherland: is he a god, or what?

- Yup, he is. Working with him is like pulling taffy with someone. The taffy just goes around and around . . . really smooth.

Rutger Hauer isn't particularly famous for letting his hair down, huh?

- I can't figure him out. He likes to see people try to figure him out. And they can't. And he clearly gets off on that.

Is Paul Reubens aware of the tremendous public support for him?

- I tell him about it all the time. The greatest thing he did was the MTV video awards. We talk a lot. He's a very mysterious person. Nice. Funny. Different.

Did you get a crush on any of these guys?

- I had a crush on all of them.

What's the plot of The Return Of Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

- We thought it might be kind of funny if Buffy joined the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210. Suddenly Buffy is chasing vampires around Beverly Hills High and starts running down the street and into the set of Melrose Place . . .

The high school kids in Buffy are vicitms of fashion trends and unfortunate suburban slang. The vampires sport leather and killer one-liners-and they die. Why is that?

- Because in the end it doesn't come down to who's wearing the coolest clothes.

Thank you JESUS.

- If you shop on Melrose, you have to die!
