Kristin Kreuk Interview
The WB series "Smallville" toyed with us all season with one question: Will Clark Kent and Lana Lang hook up? With fans itching for more, the two might get their chance in the two-part season finale that airs Tuesday night and concludes May 20 at 9 p.m. (ET). But before Kristin Kreuk reveals more about the couple's fate, I asked her just what is it about Vancouver-shot "Smallville" that keeps audiences glued to their TV screens every week? "I think that the show appeals to so many different types of people," the 20-year-old Vancouver, B.C., native said. "There are various elements to it. Heart and soul. Romance. The show deals with family relationships that appeal to all different ages and races." On the show, Lana has lost her parents, her boyfriend, her childhood friend--and almost her horse. Why does this keep happening to her? "A lot of it is just bad luck on her part," said Kreuk. "I feel so terribly for her. The poor girl, she tries desperately hard to stop that from happening, but it doesn't seem to stop at all. She's going to have to grow a lot." But it does show that Lana is strong. "Most people would have just broken down, and she does that every once in a while," said Kreuk. "[But] she's lucky that she has people like Clark [Tom Welling] to help her carry that burden." Some views may think Lana is stupid. After all, she has to know Clark is an alien. "Lana is suspicious about him," Kreuk revealed. "She isn't like 'Chloe Sullivan' [actress Allison Mack], in the sense that she doesn't think about all the weird things that go on in 'Smallville.' Lana wouldn't question whether he was human. I think she just sees him as a sexy guy." So, will Lana learn Clark's secret? "Anything is a possibility," Kreuk said. "He does have a heavy secret he can't share with her. I don't know what the writers' plans are, but maybe a couple of seasons down the line she'll learn." Well, even if the character isn't very smart, everyone agrees that Lana/Kreuk are major babes. "Well, I don't know," laughed Kreuk. "I can't think about it. It's flattery, I guess." On the internet, "Smallville" message boards on fan sites are a buzz with rumors and spoilers. "I don't have the internet right now, so I'm kind of disconnected from the world," Kreuk said. "It's kind of nice not to get feedback. It's important to get feedback, but it should be from people you know and respect. People that care about you." Kreuk shouldn't worry too much; "Smallville" struggled in its first season, but now, it's the WB's top-rated show. Before she decided to pursue acting, Kreuk wanted to study forensic pathology. "I wanted to be a forensic scientist," she said. "I was interested in the problem-solving aspect of it. That you could go to a crime scene and find out how someone got into a house, or how someone was killed. I thought it was an interesting field and I still do." In her final year of school, her drama teacher told her to audition for Fox's "Edgemont," where she garnered the role of Laurel Yeung, a Chinese-Canadian high school student. Then, she landed "Smallville" on the WB, followed by a fresh new look at "Snow White" in an ABC-TV movie. Born to a Chinese mother and a Dutch father, the dimpled beauty graces magazine covers worldwide. She's also in the Neutrogena club with notable veterans Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Kreuk thinks commercials are a very different world. "There are long days of feeling really giddy and hyper, she said. "They splash your face... and the water has to go in the right direction. I'm really bad at it." When she's not working, Kreuk likes to listen to hip hop. "Actually, I'm into all types of music," she said. "I go through phases, but I do enjoy The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest. My music collection is very eclectic." And what does the future hold for Kreuk? Professionally, she sees herself growing, taking more roles that she can be proud of and that challenge her. "...I'm overly critical. Normally, I'm not that happy with the work that I've done. There's this actor part of me that knows I can do a great job." Now, for the immediate future: Will Clark and Lana hook up? It's been two years of will they, won't they? It must be a strain. Kreuk won't say much about the finale except that "Clark changes each characters' lives." |
