Kelly Rowland Interview
ST: Now I understand Solange helped write some of the songs on your album? Tell us about that. Kelly: Yes, can you believe it? First of all, Solange is so talented and I just think that she's just gonna be a phenomenon. She's an incredible writer and her words have so much detail and so much substance. It's not just a song and she puts her heart and soul into a song. She's incredible. My song is like, I mean my album, excuse me, is way better because of her, definitely. ST: And you did a little writing too yourself, right? Kelly: Yeah, well actually Beyonce told me before I went into the studio, she said, 'You better write!' She was so supportive about writing. Of course, she's a wonderful writer, so I couldn't, you know, say no because she's so wonderful as a writer. So I was like okay, I'm going to write a little bit, and I did. ST: So, what made you guys decide to put your album out right now? Kelly: Well, actually Beyonce, of course, was suppose to come next after my album was suppose to come, but what happened was "Dilemma" was it's own time bomb, and it did it's own thing, and when it shot up to #1 we were like okay, you gotta put an album out fast, 'cause you wanna go off the energy from that song into an album. We thought that would be a perfect idea. Our brilliant manager, Matthew Knowles, was like that's exactly what we're going to do. He said, 'We're gonna put out an album and we'll have to record it fast.' And that's what happened. So... ST: So what's it like being on stage all by yourself without no one to your left and no one to your right? Kelly: It felt so weird when I performed on Soul Train. That was actually my first time being on stage with nobody but myself and I have to say if y'all were to felt my palms, felt my heart beat, it was so weird because I couldn't look to the left or right of me and see my sisters, but I was so nervous. But I'm so glad -- I call Beyonce's dad my dad -- my dad, Matthew Knowles, was there for me 'cause I don't think I could've gotten through it [without him]. And I have a wonderful crew around me that's like, 'It's okay, it's okay,' and they tell me the truth. If it was bad, it was bad, if it was good, it was good. So, I did it. ST: Okay, congratulations. Kelly: Thank you. ST: Last question. Tell us about the movie you're in and what else is coming up for Kelly. Kelly: I'm in a movie now entitled Freddy versus Jason and my character's name is Piaa, and I remember going to the audition and saying, 'I ain't gonna get this, it's a horror movie, it's hard to act scared.' But I did it and they called me back and I went to the second audition and I made it. Next thing I know, I was on the movie set. Everything happened so fast. I got in there and the first day of course I was nervous, but everything turned out okay, and I think I love it now. I really love it, like, I love doing things that's a challenge. The solo record was a challenge, and now the movie is a challenge. I'm sure that it's another thing I'll get through, just like the solo record, so I would love to do another movie. Hopefully, after the record comes out -- October 22nd, entitled Simply Deep -- that I'll be on a tour. I miss performing so much. We just finished, Destiny's Child just finished a world tour, and that just brought back all the energy from it. So, hopefully I get on a tour and do another movie in between there. After that, end of next year, Destiny's Child is coming and doing another record and we're gonna put it out and I'm really excited about that. |
