Karolina Kurkova Interview

WS: This is a big month for you. Al those clients who were worried about you being too young can relax now. You finally turn eighteen.

Karolina: Can you believe it. It's all been going so fast. Thirteen,fourteen... sixteen. Whoosh. I'm very excited though.

WS: You should have a party with a proper cake and all.

K: I would really love to celebrate it. Usually my birthday comes and I'm the middle of the Milan fittings and by the time my fittings are done all I have time for is sleep (lol) But this year I would love to have a small dinner or something.

WS: Last time you graced MDC with your presence you were an unknown sixteen year old. Now you're practically a household name. How does that feel?

K: I feel very happy, first of all. I feel very blessed and I'm so grateful for all that's happening! I never imagined it would all happen to this extent. Day by day it all just built up to where it is now.

WS: Did opening the Victoria Secret show unnerve you?

K: A little bit. I knew it was tens of millions of people watching but it was exciting. It was more nervousness from the energy and the buzz and excitement than anything else. You end up feeding off that.

WS: What possessed you to do that wacky Zoolander bit on the show?

K: When I got there for the fitting they interviewed me for an hour..asking me questions about growing up...how I got started..quite serious questions . And I gave quite serious answers.... like this (Karolina sits with her legs crossed and head perched on her chin). So then the interviewer asks me a question about the movies and I get all excited and start to say how much I loved Zoolander. So I did that silly moment and then they were like, "Oooh that's great. We have to get that on tape It's so good" and that's what made the cut.

WS: Kids loved it because it showed you were not this aloof, severe snob that people might presume you to be from the pictures.

K: It was so funny. At the time I was worried that all the other girls were being professional and glamorous and I'm on national TV making funny faces. (lol)

WS: Do you feel more pressure these days when you work?

K: Definitely backstage there's more attention now ...more photographers... more TV crews ...more interviews. At the same time the people close to me treat me the same way as always so I don't think I've changed. My life has changed, professionally but I don't feel like I'm any different personally.

WS: Do you get recognized on the street?

K: I didn't expect this but it happens. Sometimes I'm just walking around in my baseball hat, shopping, you know, doing everyday things and people...from Peru or America or Germany...come up and ask for autographs. And they know my name. Which is really sweet. It's so touching

WS: You should be used to it though. Didn't you grow up in the public eye as a little girl?

K: In my country, but my country is really small. So it wasn't really the kind of public celebrity like what you have here. My father was a well-known basketball player so sports people who were interested in basketball would know him. But it wasn't like we had to have bodyguards (lol)

WS: Speaking of countries. Name your favorite place in the world..

K: Uhmmm I really love Prague being Czech. I like Vienna a lot. The Maldives. Oh and I love Italy. Venice, Florence, Rome, Capri, Sicily. Tuscany

WS: Places w. history

K: Exactly. Beautiful places w. warm people and great food. Good food. That's very important.

WS: That's good to know since everybody presumes models don't eat.

K: I don't know where that comes from because trust me, all the models I know LOVE to eat.

WS: Who were your model idols growing up?

K: Linda. At the time I was looking at TV and the magazines it was the time of the supermodel. I really liked Christy Turlington and Naomi too.

WS: Have you met them yet?

K: Yes in Paris for the big YSL couture show I met Naomi and I saw her at the Ungaro and the Gaultier so we talked. She was really incredibly sweet.

WS: Runway vs Photo-shoot choose your fave.

K: I can't pick one versus the other. I love them all. Runway is fun. Especially when the clothes are great, the music is going, the lights go up and POW. I love shooting for magazines too. It's more intimate but it's just as exciting as the runway. You get the same kind of adrenaline from the lights and the make-up and the clothes but for a smaller audience. It's more like in a show you give your energy to the crowd. For a shoot you have to aim it right at the photographer.
