Gina Gershon Interview

Do you ever sing Karaoke? Not as often as I’d like to.

If you did, what song would you pick? Oh, there are so many to choose from. I don’t know. I’ll have to look at the list. I can’t think of one off the top of my head.

Who has it harder – struggling musicians or struggling actors? I think it’s difficult for both of them. Struggling at anything that you want to be doing is hard.

Could you relate to the musician because you’ve been a struggling actor? Yeah, definitely. And a lot of my friends are struggling musicians. Being a struggling actor, it’s just frustrating because you’re not allowed to do what you want to do.

How did you overcome it? I haven’t. [Laughs] I feel like I still am struggling in a lot of different ways. I still have to fight for certain things. Certain jobs. I still have to fight for, even when you’re within a movie, you’re still struggling for certain things. I mean, at least I’m working and I’m thankful for that.

Didn’t you get this made because of your name? Yeah, but I had to fight to get money for it. It’s not like someone’s saying, “Oh my God, you’re you, here’s a couple million dollars.” It’s a lot of work. You’d think it would be a lot easier and it’s sometimes not.

Why have directors cast you as bisexuals? They haven’t frequently. Isn’t this only the second or third? Second?

Third. No, second. Bound I was a lesbian. Showgirls I was bisexual. This is my second bisexual.

I didn’t distinguish that carefully. I don't know. Because I did Showgirls and Bound at the same time and she kind of was a whatever. She kind of would sleep with anything. She wasn’t really a sexual person in a way. She was just a power person. I don't know, maybe from Bound, people thought- - I have no idea actually. I’m trying to make up an answer. I have no idea.

Do people find your sexuality exotic? I don't know. I can’t really answer that question. I think I’m not very judgmental or I have more male energy in me- - actually, I really, truly don’t know the answer to that.

Shooting in LA, did you discover any parts of the city? I knew about them. I’d never produced a film before, so it’s not like I was saying, “Oh, let’s shoot here.” It’s all local spots.

What are the best spots? You know, the funny thing, I don’t really know clubs in LA so much. I go to places and I can’t remember where I’m going. Just someone will drag me somewhere. So I’m not really good at answering that question.

Did you ever want to push your Wachowski connections for a role in The Matrix? Sure. Didn’t work. I tried.

Would you ever say Bound or Matrix was better? Oh, they’re two totally different films. I mean, they’re both really great films.

I’ll go on record for Bound. I appreciate that, but I think it’s such a different sort of movie. I think the original Matrix was really incredible. It was so original and it did so many innovative things with film. It was a much bigger film. Bound was just a smaller film. It was kind of like an old noir film. I think they’re really great directors.
