Dannii Minogue Interview - Lets talk about sex
Dannii Minogue is Australian. This is highly relevant. If she were from anywhere else, she'd probably squeeze pertly into those pigeon holes teen popstars tend to find for themselves. Being from down under she's to the point, shameless, fond of a tipple and not afraid of sex, as opposed to just peddling it. One glance at the cover for Dannii's comeback single "All I Wanna Do" should underline this. Dannii, sporting the shortest skirt imaginable stands in high heels with one finger in a goldfish bowl, whilst she licks the other. Hardly the stuff you'll normally find gazing out at you as wander down to the hyperstore for the latest Peter Andre CD. Even the Spice Girls' faux sexuality stops short of actually being sexy. "Oh cool, I'm glad you noticed that", Dannii chuckles. "It's my homage to Playboy, it's a tribute to a photo shoot from a 70's Playboy, which was my favourite era. The model in the original shoot was naked of course". Yes Dannii, but how many pop singers take their inspiration from Playboy coffee table books? "I don't think that many", she replies. "But since I've been in Playboy myself in Australia, I love it, and I think it's really empowering and positive towards women, which is not a view that many women hold." Agreed Dannii, which is exactly why you're going to have to explain yourself. "OK" Dannii obliges, completely unflustered. "Playboy asked me to be in the magazine. First it's a huge compliment, secondly I thought that it would be really fun and thirdly my marriage had just broken up and most girls would have just cut their hair and dyed it a different colour. I thought I'd do Playboy." "On the way out of the airport, I got an American Playboy, which is totally different to the Australian Playboy - it's more showgirly and tacky rather than the Australian one which is about the articles I'd say! So I get to the hotel and this Playboy falls out of my bag and Dad just looks at me and says 'OK, just tell me what's going on.' They freaked out, their jaws hit the floor and Dad says 'You know if you do this you have to live with it for the rest of your life, I really want you to think about this'. "But I got to choose my own photographer and if I don't like the pictures at the end of the shoot, they were not going to print any of them. There is no other magazine in the world that will do that for anyone, this is why Playboy is empowering for women. Your first thoughts would probably be 'Oh they forced those girls to do that'. It's not, they ask people if they want to do it and then go 'here's the budget, what do you need?'". But Dannii the reason people would buy a Playboy with you on the cover is quite simple - they want to see you naked. "I didn't have to be completely naked, they just wanted sexy pictures. I did end up doing shots that were completely naked, but they weren't like terrible shots, actually my grandmother saw the pictures and called me up and said 'you look beautiful.' I'm not one that's scared of being naked and I don't think we should be. "Playboy magazine is somewhere men can get completely off on admiring women and their bodies. My brother loves women, not in a bad way, in a really positive way, he's got a girlfriend, but if he sees a girl walking down the street who he thinks looks really great he won't go Hugghhhh, he'll just smile and say 'You look fantastic' and this girl walks off with a smile on her face and the best feeling for the rest of the day and that's how it should be." For the record, Dannii's Playboy appearance gave them their biggest circulation ever and had to reprinted three times to cope with demand. Her ex-hubby's reaction to the shoot wasn't recorded, but Dannii's new beau has expressed his approval. |
