- Amy Grant Amy Grant Info Amy Lee Grant was born November 25, 1960, in Augusta, Georgia, but was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. The Grant family returned to Nashville after her father, a doctor, completed his residency in Georgia. Playing guitar for her high-school friends in Nashville, Amy Grant already showed the musical aptitude that would eventually propel her to stardom. Heavily influenced by the Church and the hymns played during services, she grew up dabbling in singing and songwriting at the city's most prestigious schools. a sweeping success story Grant's boost into the music industry seems like it was written from a storybook. Working at a local studio sweeping floors, a tape that she had made for her family was overheard by an executive in Nashville, who subsequently played it for his peers. Soon after, Grant was signed at the age of 17. She released her first album one year later and the world (and music charts) was introduced to a fresh, young face that would top the charts for at least another quarter-century. spreading the gospel The concept of crossing over was not out of reach for Grant, who, after seeing her reach as a new artist, established Christian music as an acceptable genre to all. With the 1982 album Age To Age, she proved that there was room for faith and gospel in pop. She received a Grammy for Best Contemporary Album in 1983 and followed it up with Straight Ahead, Unguarded and Heart In Motion, which spawned the single that introduced her to the rest of the pop music world in 1991: "Baby, Baby." The success of "Baby, Baby" made her the first "Christian" musician to hit the number one spot on the Billboard charts, and it was followed up by the hit, "That's What Love Is For." Already married with two children, Grant was a huge star and still rising. life is sweet Grant became an icon with follow-up albums that saw success (albeit not always the same kind of success as their predecessors), and the fact that she used her fame to better other people's lives only helped her cause. With connections in Hollywood and politics (such as the Bush families), Grant established herself as a caring artist who was aware of just how lucky she was. In total (and so far), she has raked in five Grammys and a whopping 18 Dove awards, in addition to humanitarian awards from various establishments. After a trifecta of Christmas albums and a religious release in 2002 called Legacy... Hymns & Faith, Grant is firmly settled into a comfortable life with her more recent husband, famed country singer Vince Gill and her four children (one with Gill). But of course, fame came at a price, as Grant was hurled into controversy when rumors were flying that she and Vince Gill were already romantically involved at the time of Grant's first marriage. With 17 albums, awards on her mantle, television appearances and tours, Amy Grant is truly "da woman" -- and we have faith in her talent and celebrity. |
