Alice Krige (her last name is pronounced KREE-GA) was born June 28th, 1954 in Upington, Northern Cape Province, South Africa (Upington is situated on the Orange river and is on the southern edge of the Kalahari desert, not far from the country's borders with Namibia and Botswana). Alice's mother was a psychologist, and Alice began her education Rhodes University in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, with the intention of taking up her mother's profession. The university had just opened a new school of drama, however, and she caught the theatre bug after taking an acting class, eventually earning an honors degree in drama.
She moved on to studies at Central School of Speech and Drama in London, UK, and in 1980 had her first professional starring role in a t.v. movie of Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities, appearing opposite Chris Sarandon. The next year she made her London stage debut in Shaw's Arms and the Man. It was also in 1981 that she gained international attention when she appeared in Chariots of Fire, the 1981 best-picture-oscar winning story of British runner in the 1924 Olympics. Since then she has appeared in numerous feature films, television films, and theatrical plays. She is often saught out for roles reqiring a enigmatic presence. She is married to director Paul Schoolman.
