"My first year in Hollywood was a virtual comedy of errors. I was told I was too tall, and too beautiful. I found myself being cast to play dead bodies and scantily clad bimbos."
- Alice MacGraw
Alice MacGraw Info
Ali MacGraw knows a thing or two about discovery. In 1967, she was a hardworking photo assistant and then model when film stardom beckoned. Already twenty-nine years old, with no acting ambitions or experience, MacGraw was plucked from behind the camera and given a bit part opposite Kirk Douglas in A Lovely Way to Die (1968). Next came leading roles: as a Jewish American princess in an adaptation of Philip Roth's novella Goodbye, Columbus (1969), and as a dying New Englander in the weepy WASP classic Love Story (1970).
Underprepared and overwhelmed as Hollywood's new "It girl," MacGraw married producer Bob Evans, then megastar Steve McQueen. She appeared in several movie flops before becoming a substance abuser, as recounted in her 1991 memoir, Moving Pictures. It's been eighteen years since Interview last spoke with the now sixty-one-year-old video yoga star and accessories designer. Currently based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, MacGraw recently reflected on her newly discovered inner peace.
