Alexandra Tydings is best known for her portrayal of Aphrodite, the quirky goddess of love, on "Xena Warrior Princess" and "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." When she booked the role, her father advised her to take advantage of her trip to New Zealand, since she might never have that opportunity again. Little did he know that what began as a one episode guest spot and two weeks overseas would snowball into a five year run which continues as the top fan favorite recurring character on the number one syndicated show.
Alex's life as a performer began when she was too young to remember, when she learned to Irish step dance. She thoroughly enjoyed the culture of dancing, especially the Irish festivals and competitions. By the time she was eleven years old, she was flown to England and Ireland to represent the United States at the All World Championships. Her life of traveling and performing had begun. Irish dance naturally led Alexandra to discover ballet, which she studied at the American Ballet Theater. She performed with the Royal Ballet of London at the Kennedy Center and the Washington Ballet at the Lincoln Center. She also sang at the Kennedy Center, in Gunther Shuler's Cherry Blossom concert. Alexandra studied at La Sorbonne in Paris, won a National Merit Scholarship and attended Brown University. While directing and staring in numerous student and Independent films, she reaffirmed her passion for performing. So when she graduated with a BA with honors, she packed her bags and moved to Los Angeles. After getting her feet wet in a few episodes of television, Alex was quickly cast opposite Woody Harrelson in Michael Cimino's film "The Sunchaser." Shortly thereafter she created the valley girl love goddess character of Aphrodite, which she has enjoyed ever since. The fan reaction came as an enormous surprise and Alexandra was amazed when a friend called her to tell her that were hundreds of websites dedicated to her. Official site Alexandra will soon be appearing in the Jon Favreau film "Made" with Vince Vaughn and Famke Janssen. She has also finished her first science fiction project, the audio play "Anne Manx and the Ring of the Minotaur," starring Claudia Christian. Alex has also played series leads in several pilots and performed in numerous episodic guest starring roles. In her down time, Alex loves to travel and explore the locations she works in. She also continues her passion for dance and competition by learning new styles of dancing (African, Salsa, Samba...) and training for her next belt in Tae Kwon Do. When she's home, she can't get enough of her two ridiculously enormous dogs, Maggie and Stella. The three of them currently reside in Los Angeles. |
