Acme Celeb: Adrienne Barbeau

Adrienne Barbeau Interview

Sandra: I'll never forget when I got caught shoplifting. I was nine years old and I gave back the hair brush. Yet another crime spree comes to a halt. But it seems in films, women are always on the lam. My special guest, Adrienne Barbeau, sure knows what's it's like to be chased. Tell me, Adrienne, don't you prefer to do the chasing? That's the big question.

Adrienne: Oh, I'd much rather do the chasing. (Laughs)

Sandra: Well, we chased you right into our studios.

Adrienne: Well, it sure looks like I was caught by someone (rubs very pregnant tummy) (Laughs)

Sandra: Oh honey, we won't dwell on that. We'll get to that later. I mean, you really are a superchick. You have done it all: radio, TV, film, everything. You've done it all.

Adrienne: Yeah, I have. I've even hosted a talk show.

Sandra: Have you?

Adrienne: But when I think of superchicks, I think of the roles, not the variety. I think it's a combination of them both.

Sandra: Yeah. And your career is a combination of your roles and your real life.

Adrienne: Oh, thank you.

Sandra: Now, you started out in B-movies, low-budget slashers. With John Carpenter and George Romero. What's it like for an actress to get lost in the fog or run around the swamp?

Adrienne: The swamp was not fun.

Sandra: Where did you shoot that stuff?

Adrienne: In South Carolina.

Sandra: So you were really outside in the stuff!

Adrienne: Yeah. And they had to put stuff in our ears, antiseptic.

Sandra: So you wouldn't get ear infections?

Adrienne: Yes. I used to go to bed convinced that I had leeches all over my back and body.

Sandra: (In country accent) "I've got leeches all over my body! I'm bleeding!"

(Both laugh)

Adrienne: Interesting. There is a scene in "The Fog" where, I guess because we were low-budget, this was 1979 and maybe they couldn't do it. But they could get the fog to come into a room, but they could not get it to leave. In the final scene where I'm on the roof and the ghost is about to do his thing, the, it's been so long since I've seen the movie, fog suddenly goes back. And we had to shoot that scene backward. I had to act backward. And John Carpenter said, "When you blink, blink slow, because if you don't it will look weird."

Sandra: Bizarre.

Adrienne: You had to remember all the acting points. First, I'm scared, then he's leaving, and then oh, I'm scared again!

Sandra: Now today they can pull fog out of any room.

Adrienne: Yeah, it really blows my mind.

PART TWO

Sandra: Is there room with sex symbols to be feminists? What do you think?

Adrienne: I think so. In all the horror films that I have done, all of those women were strong women. I don't feel I ever played the victim, although I was always in jeopardy.

Sandra: Right.

Adrienne: "Creature" was one of my favorites. I remember when I showed up in Pittsburg and I met George for the first time, I said, "This is what I am going to do, and if you don't like it, just send me on home." Because it (the monster) was so much bigger than what we usually used on film because he wanted that cartoony atmosphere. In the end, although she was a victim and got it in the end, she was one of my favorites. Besides, she deserved it!

Sandra: And she was damn sexy.

(Both laugh)

Sandra: I guess it is tough to find a role when you are eight months pregnant. (Sandra rubs Adrienne's tummy)

(Both laugh)

Adrienne: Yeah. I have been doing a lot of voiceover work. I broke out the old night club act. (Laughs)

Sandra: Perfect.

Adrienne: They was one role in the trades, but she was a twenty year old woman. It's hard to find parts for a 51-year old woman who is eight months pregnant.

Sandra: God bless you, honey.

Adrienne: Thanks. I am having a fun time.

Sandra: Well, that's what it is all about. You don't have any children with your current husband? This is his first?

Adrienne: Yes, we are going to have a Billy Junior and a little Billy.

Sandra: Both are boys?

Adrienne: Both boys. They are identical.

Sandra: What a trip!

Adrienne: We go to the hospital every week, and each time they look different.

Sandra: Two future B-movie actors.

Adrienne: (laughs) Maybe. Well, my husband writes sitcoms so..

Sandra: They will be in the business in some form.

(Both laugh)

Sandra: Thanks for coming on the show. You're a sweetheart.

Adrienne: Thanks.
